Why shingles wear out here, and where metal roofs fail anyway
Hail, high winds, heavy rain and long stretches of summer heat all land on an East Texas roof. On shingles that shows up as curling tabs, granules washing into the gutters and algae streaks, and a shingle roof might give you 15 to 25 years. That is why more Tyler property owners keep asking about metal.
Metal changes the math, but it has weak points of its own, and they are rarely the panels. Trouble sits at the details: seams, closures, fasteners and flashing. One Tyler homeowner called us about a four-year-old metal roof from another installer that had started to leak. The cause was roof closures that were never installed.
On commercial buildings the same story plays out at a bigger scale: leaks, seam failures, loose panels and storm damage on standing-seam and metal-panel roofs. We repair those across Tyler and East Texas as well as installing new ones.
How the Steele inspector reads a metal roof before anyone quotes it
It starts with a free roof inspection and a written assessment, with no pressure and no obligation. The inspector checks that the roof is safe to walk, then looks at the parts that decide whether metal lasts: how the seams are locked, whether the closures are in, and where the roof meets walls, vents and penetrations. On a hail job he circles every hit in chalk so you can see what he sees.
Then we talk through the style you want and the kind of property you have, and price the system that fits. The four systems we install are laid out in the sheet below this section, along with what the Class 4 rating does and does not mean.
Steele Roofing is locally owned and operated on Hwy 69 South in Tyler. We are licensed and insured, and we plan to be here long after the job is done. If something shows up in a year or in four, you know where the office is.
What to watch for once the panels are on
Upkeep on a metal roof is usually light. You are not chasing curling tabs or granules in the gutters. What you do want is a look after every serious storm: a loose panel, a lifted trim piece, a seam that has opened, a fastener or closure that has worked loose.
Residential owners can put an inspector on the roof every spring and fall with the Steele Shield plan, $249 a year, which includes flashing and roof penetration inspections and a detailed photo report. Ask us whether it fits your metal roof. It covers upkeep, not storm damage repairs.
